Aluminum patio cover being installed on an Okanagan home

Aluminum Patio Covers Guide: What We Tell Every Homeowner

May 2026·10 min read

We’ve installed aluminum patio covers across the Okanagan for years. Here’s everything we wish every homeowner knew before picking up the phone — the types, the costs, what works in our climate, and the mistakes we see people make.

Why We Install Aluminum (and Not Wood)

This is the first thing we tell people: wood patio covers don’t last here. The Okanagan swings from -25°C in January to 40°C+ in July. Wood splits, warps, and rots. We’ve torn out more rotting wood pergolas than we can count.

Aluminum doesn’t rust, rot, or warp. It handles snow loads, UV, and heat without flinching. A powder-coated aluminum patio cover installed today will look the same in 20 years with almost zero upkeep. That’s not a sales pitch — it’s what we see on jobsites every day.

Pro Tip: Ask any contractor what material they’d put on their own house. If they’re honest and they work in the Okanagan, the answer is aluminum. Every time.

Types of Aluminum Patio Covers

Not all aluminum covers are the same. Here are the main types we install. For design ideas and layout inspiration, we have a separate guide on that.

Solid Pan Covers

Interlocking aluminum panels that create a fully waterproof roof. This is our most popular option — it blocks sun, rain, and snow completely. Great for outdoor kitchens, hot tub areas, or anywhere you want guaranteed dry space.

Insulated Covers

Two layers of aluminum with foam insulation sandwiched between them. Drops the temperature underneath by 15-20 degrees on a hot day, and dampens the sound of rain. Worth the extra cost if you spend a lot of time on your patio.

Lattice Covers

Open aluminum lattice that lets filtered light through. Good for growing vines or if you want partial shade without feeling closed in. Just know — it won’t keep you dry when it rains.

Insulated vs Non-Insulated: Is It Worth the Upgrade?

We get asked this on almost every quote. Here’s the honest answer:

FeatureNon-InsulatedInsulated
Temperature reductionBlocks direct sun15-20°C cooler underneath
Rain noiseYou’ll hear itQuiet — foam dampens sound
Cost differenceBase price30-50% more
Best forBudget projects, carportsLiving spaces, outdoor kitchens

If your patio is where you eat dinner, watch the game, or host friends, go insulated. If it’s covering a storage area or a carport, non-insulated does the job just fine.

Attached vs Freestanding

Attached covers bolt to your house’s fascia or wall. Fewer posts, cleaner look, and no gap for rain to sneak through. This is what most of our customers choose.

Freestanding covers stand on their own with posts on all four corners. We use these for pool areas, garden pavilions, or when the homeowner doesn’t want anything attached to the house. They cost a bit more because of the extra posts and footings.

Good to know: Freestanding covers sometimes have an easier permit process since they’re not modifying your home’s structure. Worth checking with your municipality.

Built for Okanagan Weather

People move here for the sun and the lake — but our weather is hard on outdoor structures. Here’s what a patio cover actually deals with in the Okanagan:

  • Summer heat: 35-42°C regularly. Non-insulated metal gets hot. Insulated panels stay noticeably cooler.
  • Winter snow: A properly engineered aluminum cover handles 40+ lbs per square foot of snow load, which meets BC Building Code for our region.
  • UV exposure: We get 300+ sunny days a year. Powder-coated finishes with UV inhibitors prevent fading and chalking.
  • Wind: Valley winds can gust hard. Aluminum’s strength-to-weight ratio means it handles 150+ km/h wind loads when properly fastened.

What Aluminum Patio Covers Actually Cost

We won’t give you a single number because every project is different. But here’s what the range looks like in the Okanagan as of 2026:

Cover TypeCost per Sq Ft (Installed)10×20 Example
Solid aluminum$25 – $50$5,000 – $10,000
Insulated aluminum$35 – $65$7,000 – $13,000
Lattice$20 – $40$4,000 – $8,000
Freestanding (any type)Add 20-30%Varies

These include materials, engineering, permits, and installation. The biggest factors that move the price are size, whether it’s attached or freestanding, and the pitch of your roofline. For a detailed breakdown, check our cost guide.

How We Install a Patio Cover

Start to finish, most residential installations take 1-3 days. Here’s the process:

  1. Site visit & measurements — We come out, take measurements, check your roof attachment point, and talk through options.
  2. Engineering & permits — We draw up plans and pull the building permit. This takes 2-4 weeks depending on your municipality.
  3. Footings & posts — Concrete footings go in first. They need to cure before we load them.
  4. Frame & panels — The aluminum frame goes up, then the roof panels lock into place.
  5. Finishing — Gutters, downspouts, trim, and a final walkthrough with you.

Maintenance & How Long They Last

This is the part homeowners love hearing: aluminum patio covers need almost no maintenance. Here’s the full list:

  • Hose it down once or twice a year to rinse off pollen and dust
  • Clear leaves from the gutters in fall
  • Check fasteners every few years (they rarely loosen)

That’s it. No staining, no sealing, no replacing rotted boards. A well-installed aluminum cover lasts 25-30+ years. We back ours with a 30-year warranty. For more detail, read our maintenance guide.

Do You Need a Permit in BC?

Short answer: yes, almost always. Every municipality in the Okanagan — Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Lake Country — requires a building permit for a patio cover. The permit process typically takes 2-4 weeks and costs $150-$400.

We handle the permit application as part of every project. You don’t need to deal with the city yourself. For the full breakdown on permit requirements, we have a separate guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an aluminum patio cover last?

With proper installation, 25-30+ years. We warranty ours for 30 years. The powder-coated finish holds up to Okanagan UV without fading or chalking.

Can aluminum patio covers handle Okanagan snow?

Yes. Our covers are engineered for 40+ lbs per square foot of snow load, which exceeds BC Building Code requirements for the valley. We’ve never had a structural failure from snow.

Do I need a building permit for a patio cover in Kelowna?

Yes. Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, and Lake Country all require building permits. We handle the application for you — it takes 2-4 weeks and costs $150-$400.

What’s the difference between insulated and non-insulated covers?

Insulated covers have foam between two aluminum layers, which drops the temperature underneath by 15-20 degrees and dampens rain noise. They cost 30-50% more but are worth it for living spaces. Non-insulated is fine for carports or storage areas.

How much does an aluminum patio cover cost in the Okanagan?

Solid aluminum runs $25-$50 per square foot installed. Insulated is $35-$65. For a standard 10×20 patio, expect $5,000-$13,000 depending on the type and configuration. Freestanding adds 20-30%.

Should I get an attached or freestanding patio cover?

Attached if your patio is next to the house — it’s cheaper and blends right into your roofline. Freestanding if you’re covering a pool, hot tub, or garden area away from the house.
