Glass vs Aluminum Patio Covers: The Honest Comparison
Glass vs aluminum patio cover: no single winner. Aluminum gives full shade and next to no upkeep for less money. Glass keeps your view and the daylight, for more cleaning and a higher cost. It comes down to which way your deck faces and what you want to see overhead.
Every cover here, glass or aluminum, is designed, built and installed by our own crew out of our West Kelowna shop.

Aluminum Patio Cover vs Glass Patio Cover: Quick Comparison
Before you pick a side, look at the numbers side by side. These aren’t manufacturer averages. They’re what we actually see across the covers we’ve built in Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Lake Country and Salmon Arm. Aluminum wins on shade and upkeep. Glass wins on light and view. Neither one is the wrong answer, and we build plenty of both every year.
| Factor | Glass | Aluminum |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Keeps the sky and the view | Full shade, blocks daylight |
| Heat | Needs tint on south/west decks or it runs hot | Stays cooler, full shade year-round |
| Snow | Tempered glass and frame built for an Okanagan winter | Naturally strong, built for an Okanagan winter |
| Cleaning | A few times a year with a hose | Rain keeps it clean, little to none |
| Look | Open, modern, keeps the view | Clean roof line, feels more enclosed |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
Covered Patio Glass: Light, Views and the Upkeep That Comes With It
A glass patio cover is tempered safety glass set in a heavy-gauge aluminum frame, clear or tinted in grey, green or a neutral shade. Covered patio glass keeps the sky, the trees and the lake view in play instead of hiding them under a solid roof. That’s the whole appeal. You trade some maintenance and a higher cost for the view and the daylight.
For most of our customers, a glass patio enclosure comes down to orientation. A north or east-facing deck barely notices the extra light. A south or west-facing deck in July will. Tinted glass takes the edge off without giving up the view entirely, and it’s what we recommend on most Okanagan decks that face the sun.

Patio Cover With Glass: The Tradeoff You’re Making
A patio cover with glass isn’t maintenance-free. Expect to hose it down a handful of times a year, more often if you’re under trees. It’s not hard work, just work aluminum doesn’t ask for. In return you keep natural light reaching the patio through our short winter days, instead of a dark solid roof from November through February. If you want the look without the chore, ask about a self-cleaning coating at the quote stage. It won’t stop you from cleaning it, but it cuts how often.
Aluminum Deck Covers: Full Shade, Zero Upkeep
Aluminum deck covers are the most common build we do, for a plain reason: full shade, a lower cost than glass, and next to no maintenance. Heavy-gauge structural aluminum, powder-coated in a colour to match your trim (we do custom colour matching), in a flat or gabled profile. Attached to the house or freestanding, your call.
Rain keeps the roof clean. There’s no glass to streak, no bird mess to wipe off, nothing to hose down unless you feel like it. If your deck faces south or west and takes a beating from afternoon sun, aluminum is usually the easier call. You get the shade without thinking about it again.

Metal Patio Covers Built for Okanagan Winters
Metal patio covers need to carry snow, not just rain. Ours are built to handle an Okanagan winter, and we size the structure differently for a valley lot than for a property higher up near Big White or SilverStar. The tradeoff for all that solid shade is that you lose the sky. No stars, no watching a storm roll in, no natural light reaching the room behind it on short winter days. If that room matters to you, a kitchen or a living room, glass or a glass skylight strip in the aluminum roof is worth a look instead.
What Should You Consider When Planning Patio Glazing?
If you’re set on some kind of glass, a few things decide how happy you’ll be with it. Orientation first: south and west decks need tint or they run hot by mid-afternoon. Frame colour second: black frames all but disappear against a lake or mountain view, where white frames become the thing you notice. Maintenance third: be honest about whether you’ll actually get out there with a hose a few times a year.
We design and manufacture every cover in our own West Kelowna shop and install it with our own crew, so when we walk your deck for a quote we can tell you straight which option fits, not just sell you whichever one’s easier to build that week.

Glass Patio Enclosure or Aluminum Patio Roof: Five Mistakes We Get Called to Fix
- Clear glass over a west-facing deck, no tint. Looks great in May, runs hot by August.
- Choosing full aluminum shade and missing the sky. If the view mattered to you, say so before we build it, not after.
- Solid aluminum over a kitchen window. The room goes dark all winter. Glass or a skylight strip fixes it.
- Frame colour that fights the view. White frames stand out against a lake. Black ones disappear.
- Picking a side before checking which way the deck faces. Orientation decides more of this than preference does.
Clear Patio Covers or Solid Aluminum: Which One Fits Your Deck?
Run through what actually matters on your deck: the direction it faces, whether there’s a view worth keeping, how much cleaning you’re willing to do, and how much shade you want. The answer tends to show itself. Here’s the short version.
| Your deck | Go with |
|---|---|
| Faces south or west, brutal afternoon sun | Aluminum, or tinted glass if you want the light |
| Faces north or east | Glass, clear is fine |
| Has a lake or mountain view worth keeping | Glass, slim black frame |
| Sits over kitchen or living room windows | Glass, keep the room bright |
| Budget is the deciding factor | Aluminum |
| Want full shade, zero upkeep | Aluminum |
| Can’t decide | Aluminum roof with glass skylight strips |
Can’t decide between the two? A lot of our customers split the difference: a solid aluminum roof with clear glass strips worked into it, shade where you sit and daylight at the house wall. It costs less than an all-glass roof, runs cooler, and the kitchen window still gets light. We’ll walk your deck, ask which way it faces, and tell you honestly which of these fits: glass, aluminum, or a mix of both.

Glass vs Aluminum Questions
Is it worth getting patio glazing or covering the patio in another way?
Depends on what you want out of the space. If you want the sky, the lake view or more daylight on short winter days, glass is worth it. If you want full shade, lower upkeep and you don’t mind giving up the view overhead, a solid aluminum cover does the job for less. Neither is the wrong call. It comes down to what your deck faces and what you actually use it for.
Which manufacturer has the best patio glazing?
We can only speak honestly for our own work: we design and manufacture every glass and aluminum cover in our West Kelowna shop and install it with our own crew, which is why we can stand behind both options the same way. We’re not going to pretend one brand of glazing beats another when we haven’t built it ourselves. Ask us for a quote and we’ll tell you straight which option fits your deck.
Can patio glazing handle snow loads?
Yes. Both our glass and aluminum covers are built to carry an Okanagan winter, and we size the structure to the location. A cover going up near Big White or SilverStar is built differently than one in the valley. Tempered glass and heavy-gauge aluminum both hold up; which one you choose comes down to light and upkeep, not strength.
Is a metal patio cover or a glass patio roof better for hot Okanagan summers?
Metal wins on heat. A solid aluminum roof blocks the sun completely and the space underneath stays noticeably cooler. A glass patio roof runs warm on a south or west-facing deck unless you go with tinted glass, which cuts the heat and the glare without losing the view entirely.
What’s the difference between an aluminum patio roof and a glass patio enclosure?
An aluminum patio roof is a solid, powder-coated panel roof: full shade, no view overhead, lowest upkeep. A glass patio enclosure uses tempered glass panels instead, so you keep the sky and the light but take on some regular cleaning and a higher cost. Some homeowners split the two with an aluminum roof and clear glass strips built in.
Which adds more value, an aluminum patio cover or a glass patio cover?
Both add real value. A covered patio is a covered patio to most buyers. Glass may have a slight edge on a lakefront property where the view is part of the sale. Aluminum is the stronger value play overall: lower cost, lower upkeep, and buyers notice the shade just as much as the glass.
Can I add a fan or lights to an aluminum patio cover?
Yes, it’s one of the advantages of a solid roof. Ceiling fans, recessed lighting, heaters and speakers all mount easily to an aluminum cover. Tell us at the quote stage and we can pre-wire during install, or you can add electrical later; the structure supports either.
