Why Glass Rails Need a Specialist, Not a General Contractor
Glass rails aren’t trim carpentry. Glass is cut to exact size before it’s tempered, so a post that’s off by a quarter inch means a panel that doesn’t fit, full stop. We’ve been called out to finish jobs a framer started and couldn’t close, usually because the posts went in before anyone measured the glass.
Tempered safety glass, the same type used in a shower door, comes in 12 mm for most residential glass railings, set frameless or semi-frameless depending on the look you want. Frameless uses heavy base shoes or standoffs and no top rail, which is why it reads as almost invisible against a view. Semi-frameless keeps a slim aluminum top rail, which gives a bit more forgiveness during install and usually costs less to fix if something ever needs adjusting. Both need a flat, solid substrate and a crew that’s done the work more than a handful of times.

Not every glass railing system is built the same way, and the right one depends on your deck, your view and what’s already there.
Glass Handrail Installation on an Existing Deck
Adding glass to a deck that already has a wood or concrete edge is usually straightforward, as long as the substrate is solid. We check for rot, loose boards and proper blocking at every post location during the site visit, and we’ll tell you up front if reinforcement is needed before we quote the job, not after.
Balustrade Installation for Stairs and Landings
Stairs are the part most installers get wrong. The rake angle changes the top-rail geometry, and panels run shorter than on a straight deck run, so there’s more cutting and more chances for a mismatch. Ask specifically whether your installer has done balustrade installation on stairs, not just straight railing runs.

Local Knowledge: BC’s Guard Height Code
In BC, a deck railing needs to run 900 mm, about 35.5 inches and commonly called the “36 inch” height, where the deck surface sits 1.8 m (6 ft) or less above grade. Above that, it jumps to 1,070 mm, or 42 inches. A guard is required once the deck surface is more than 600 mm (24 inches) above grade, and any openings have to stop a 100 mm (4 inch) sphere. Ask your contractor which height applies to your deck and watch how fast the answer comes.

How a Glass Deck Railing Installation Actually Works
Knowing the steps helps you tell a real process from a rushed one. First comes an on-site visit, where we measure every run, check the substrate, and talk through frameless versus semi-frameless. Glass is custom-cut and then tempered, so it can’t be trimmed after the fact. That’s why the measuring stage matters more here than on almost any other part of a deck build.
Got wood posts already? Glass can usually mount straight to them if the posts are solid, plumb and properly sized. If they’re not, we’ll say so before we quote, not after, because glass deck railing with wood posts only works if the posts can actually carry the load. Once the glass is ready, install day itself typically runs one to two days for a standard residential run, longer for stairs or multiple levels.

Start by matching the terms, not just the years. A 10-year materials warranty should name what’s covered (glass, hardware, frame) and a 3-year installation or leak warranty should spell out what counts as a failure. We back our own work with a 3-year leak warranty and a 10-year materials warranty, written down before anything’s installed. If an installer won’t put the terms on paper, that tells you more than the years do.
What Is the Delivery Time for Patio Glazing, and How Long Does Installation Take?
Custom tempered glass typically takes two to four weeks to fabricate once a design is confirmed, since it’s cut to size before tempering and can’t be trimmed afterward. Once the glass arrives, installation itself usually runs one to two days for a standard residential railing, longer for stairs or multi-level runs.
What’s the Difference Between Frameless and Semi-Frameless Glass Railing?
Frameless uses base shoes or standoff hardware and no top rail, so the glass itself does the structural work and the view stays clear. Semi-frameless adds a slim aluminum top rail, which gives a little more tolerance during install and is often the easier fix if a panel ever needs replacing. Both use the same 12 mm tempered glass.
