Glass Patio Covers: The Honest Pros and Cons for Okanagan Homeowners

October 2026·7 min read

Glass patio covers are honestly worth it if your deck faces north or east, you want light and a view, and you don’t mind cleaning. If your deck bakes in afternoon sun or you want zero maintenance, go aluminum instead, or a hybrid roof with glass strips.

We design, manufacture and install every glass cover ourselves out of our West Kelowna shop, usually in a day or two, with tempered safety glass over a heavy-gauge aluminum frame.

Covered Patio Glass: What You Actually Gain

We build both glass and aluminum covers, so we don’t have a reason to push you toward one over the other. See our glass patio covers page for the finish options and specs. Covered patio glass earns its keep in a few specific ways. Here’s what you’re actually paying for.

Patio Cover With Glass Means More Light, Less Shade

A patio cover with glass lets most of the daylight through instead of blocking it. The room behind it, a kitchen or dining nook, stays bright instead of going dark under a solid roof. For a deck off the kitchen, that’s often the whole reason to go glass over aluminum.

Glass Patio Roof Views, Especially Spring and Fall

A glass patio roof also means you keep your view. Lake, mountain, the sky at night, none of it disappears behind a solid ceiling. Spring and fall are when glass patio covers in the Okanagan earn the most compliments, since the same glass that warms the space works for you instead of against you. The right glass for patio use depends on which way your deck faces, more on that below.

The Honest Cons of an Outdoor Glass Enclosure

Now the part most comparisons skip. An outdoor glass enclosure isn’t the right call for every deck, and we’d rather tell you that now than have you find out in August.

Clear Patio Roof Heat Is the Big One

Clear glass traps heat. It’s the same effect that makes a parked car unbearable in July, just over your patio instead. A clear patio roof on a south or west-facing deck gets genuinely warm by mid-afternoon in summer. Tinted glass cuts that down noticeably. Clear glass on a north or east-facing deck barely notices it.

Our honest take: if your deck faces south or west and you mostly use it in July and August, we’d point you toward aluminum or a hybrid roof with glass strips, not an all-glass cover. Glass shines hardest in spring, fall and on north or east-facing decks.

Covered Glass Patio Cleaning Is More Work

Glass shows everything: dust, pollen, water spots, the odd bit of wildfire ash in a smoky summer. A covered glass patio needs cleaning every few months to stay looking the way it did on install day. Aluminum doesn’t ask for any of that. If you hate cleaning windows, factor this in before you commit.

Glass Patio Enclosure Cost Runs Higher Than Aluminum

A glass patio enclosure costs more than the same size aluminum cover, mostly because of the glass itself and the extra framing needed to carry it. We won’t put a number on it here since every deck is different, but if budget decides it, aluminum patio covers are the more affordable route.

Four Glass Deck Roof Mistakes We Get Called to Fix

  1. Clear glass over a west-facing deck with no tint plan. Gorgeous in May, rough by August.
  2. Putting off cleaning until it’s visibly dirty. Pollen and ash bake on and get harder to shift the longer they sit.
  3. Expecting glass to be as low-maintenance as aluminum. It isn’t, and we’d rather say so upfront than have you find out later.
  4. Choosing glass purely for looks over a cooking or dining spot used mainly in summer. That’s the one part of the deck where the heat actually gets in the way.

Tempered Glass Patio Cover: What’s Actually Overhead

Every glass cover we install uses tempered safety glass. Here’s what that actually means and why durability matters more than it looks like it would.

Glass Deck Cover Glass: Clear or Tinted, Nothing Else

A glass deck cover from us comes in clear or tinted, grey, green or neutral. That’s it. No gimmicks, no exotic coatings we can’t stand behind. Tinted cuts glare and heat; clear lets in the most light. Which one’s right depends on which way your deck faces.

Durability: Why Tempered Glass Is the Only Glass We Put Overhead

Tempered glass is the standard for anything overhead. It handles our temperature swings and winters, and if it ever does break, it comes apart into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards. We size and pitch every roof for local snow loads so it sheds snow instead of holding it. One honest limitation: no glass roof is a surface to walk on or pile anything against, tempered or not.

Worth knowing: tempered glass is several times stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness. It’s the same type used in shower doors and vehicle side windows, not something lighter-duty swapped in to save money.

Aluminum and Glass Patio Covers: The Hybrid Most People Land On

A lot of Okanagan homeowners don’t actually want all glass or all aluminum. They want light where they sit and shade where they cook. That’s where aluminum and glass patio covers in the same roof come in.

Glass Patio Roof Panels Set Into an Aluminum Roof

A solid aluminum roof with a few glass patio roof panels dropped in gives you shade over the barbecue and daylight at the house wall. It runs cooler than an all-glass roof and costs less. For a bigger deck with heavy summer use, this is usually the option we’d build ourselves. Want full walls eventually instead of just a roof? Look at our 3-season rooms, screens and glass, no insulation, built for spring through fall.

Glass Patio Cover Questions

Is it worth getting patio glazing or covering the patio in another way?

It depends on your deck’s exposure and how you use the space. Glass is worth it if you want natural light and a view and don’t mind cleaning it occasionally. If your deck faces south or west with heavy summer use, an aluminum cover or a hybrid roof usually serves you better.

What should you consider when planning patio glazing?

Start with which way your deck faces. North or east, clear glass works fine. South or west, plan on tinted glass or a hybrid roof from the start. Also think about what’s below the cover, since a kitchen window does better under glass than under a solid roof, and glass needs more regular cleaning than aluminum.

Is a glazed patio too hot in the summer?

Clear glass on a south or west-facing deck gets warm by mid-afternoon on a hot day. Tinted glass cuts that down, and mixing in aluminum panels cools it further. North or east-facing patios rarely have a heat issue even with clear glass.

Can patio glazing handle snow loads?

Yes, when it’s built and installed properly. We size and pitch every glass roof for local Okanagan snow conditions so snow slides off instead of sitting on it. Never walk on a glass roof or try to clear snow off it by hand.

Is tempered glass strong enough for a patio cover?

Yes, it’s the standard for anything overhead. Tempered glass is several times stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards if it ever fails. It’s the same glass used in shower doors and vehicle windows.

Does a covered glass patio need a lot of cleaning?

More than aluminum, yes. Expect to clean it every three to six months depending on trees, pollen and smoke season. Large or high installations are safer left to a professional, since you should never walk on the panels yourself.

Can I mix aluminum and glass patio covers in one roof?

Yes, and it’s one of our more common builds. A solid aluminum roof with glass strips set in gives you shade where you cook and light at the house wall, usually at a lower cost and a cooler result than an all-glass roof.
