Pool Fencing Built to
BC Code
Putting in a pool in BC means a code-compliant barrier is the law, not an option. We build powder-coated aluminum pool fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates that passes inspection and never rusts poolside.

Does a Pool Need a Fence in BC?
Yes. If you install a pool in the Okanagan, your municipality requires a permanent barrier around it before it can be used. Here is what the bylaws actually require.
Minimum Barrier Height
West Kelowna requires a fence or barrier at least 1.2 m (3.9 ft) high (Bylaw 12.1). Some municipalities require more, so we confirm yours.
Self-Latching Gates
Every gate must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch placed out of a young child’s reach.
No Climbable Gaps
Openings must be small enough that a child cannot pass through or use them as footholds. Aluminum pickets are built for this.
Kelowna Building Bylaw
The City of Kelowna regulates pool enclosures under Part 11 of its Building Bylaw. A permit and inspection are part of the process.
Exact height, setbacks, and gate rules vary between Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Lake Country and Salmon Arm. We have built to all of them since 2005 — we check your local requirement and design the fence to pass inspection the first time. This page is general guidance, not a substitute for your municipality’s current bylaw.
The Right Material Around Water
Won’t Rust by the Pool
Chlorine, splash, and Okanagan winters destroy iron and steel fencing. Powder-coated aluminum does not rust, so it still looks new years later.
Code-Compliant by Design
Vertical pickets with no horizontal footholds, correct spacing, and proper height. Built to keep kids and pets safe and to pass inspection.
Self-Closing, Self-Latching Gates
The part inspectors check most. Our gates swing shut and latch on their own every time, with the release out of a toddler’s reach.
Zero Maintenance, 30+ Years
No painting, no staining, no rust treatment. The same powder-coat finish and lifetime material warranty as our patio covers and railings.

Pool Fencing FAQs
Does BC law require a fence around a pool?
Yes. BC municipalities require a permanent barrier around a swimming pool before it can be used. West Kelowna requires a fence or barrier at least 1.2 m (3.9 ft) high, and the City of Kelowna regulates enclosures under Part 11 of its Building Bylaw. We confirm your local rule before building.
How tall does a pool fence need to be?
At least 1.2 m (about 4 ft) in West Kelowna, and some Okanagan municipalities require more. We design to your municipality’s current bylaw so it passes inspection.
What are the gate requirements?
Pool gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch placed out of a young child’s reach. Every gate we build meets this.
Do I need a permit for a pool fence?
Pool barriers are tied to your pool permit and inspection. We help make sure the fence meets the requirements your municipality will check.
How much does pool fencing cost?
Aluminum pool fencing runs $95 to $150 per linear foot installed, plus $350-$800 per self-latching gate. Glass pool fencing costs more. See our cost guide.
Aluminum or glass pool fence?
Aluminum is the most cost-effective, durable, code-friendly choice. Glass gives an unbroken view of the water for a premium look. We install both — ask about glass.
