Clear glass patio cover and glass railing over an Okanagan Lake view deck

Glass Patio Cover Ideas: 12 Designs for Okanagan Homes

October 2026·5 min read

Glass patio cover ideas, the short version: clear glass on north or east decks, tinted on south or west, or glass strips in an aluminum roof. Slim black frames keep the lake view, glass railing finishes it, and glass over kitchen windows keeps the house bright. Twelve designs below.

All of them use tempered safety glass on heavy-gauge aluminum frames. Designed, made and installed in the Okanagan by our own crew, usually in one to two days.

Glass Patio Roof Ideas: Clear, Tinted or Mixed

1. Clear Glass Patio Roof

Clear tempered panels, slim frame, nothing between you and the sky. On a north or east-facing patio this is the one to get. The catch? Clear glass doesn’t block heat. Over a west-facing deck in August it gets warm by mid-afternoon. That’s the rookie mistake we get called to fix most.

2. Tinted Glass Patio Cover

Same cover, grey, green or neutral tinted glass. Cuts the glare, takes the edge off the heat, still bright underneath. This is the glass patio cover idea we recommend most for sun-blasted Okanagan decks. Tint also hides dust and pollen better than clear.

3. Aluminum Patio Cover With Glass Skylight Strips

A solid aluminum roof with clear panels dropped in. Shade where you sit, light at the house wall. Cheaper than an all-glass roof, runs cooler, and the kitchen stays bright. The most practical option on this list for a big deck.

Rule of thumb: face north or east, go clear. Face south or west, go tinted or mixed. Not sure? Stand on the patio at 4pm in July. If you’re squinting, you want tint.

Glass Covered Patio Designs That Keep the View

4. Lake-View Glass Patio Cover on a Slim Black Frame

Clear or light-tint glass, thin black aluminum, posts at the outer corners. The roof almost disappears and the lake stays front and centre from every chair. Black frames vanish against a view better than white, which is why most of our lakefront jobs go black.

5. Glass Deck Cover With Glass Railing

Glass on the roof, glass around the deck. The two together turn an elevated deck into a glass box with a view. Worth it? Every time. We build both in the same visit so the frames match. The Kelowna balcony below is exactly this: tinted roof, glass railing, one black frame.

6. Glass Balcony Cover

A solid roof on a small balcony makes the room behind it dark. A glass balcony cover keeps the bedroom or kitchen bright and still lets you sit outside in the rain. Small footprint, big difference.

7. Glass Covered Deck Off the Kitchen

Our most common job. The kitchen windows sit under the cover, so glass keeps the kitchen bright and the barbecue dry from May to October. Tinted if it faces the afternoon sun, clear if it faces the morning.

8. Small Patio Glass Cover for Townhouses

A two-post glass cover off the house wall gives a narrow townhouse patio a dry, bright spot for a table and two chairs. Glass doesn’t close the space in, so a small patio under glass feels bigger than the same patio under a solid roof.

9. Glass Hot Tub Cover

Rain and snow off the tub, stars overhead at night, and the deck boards around the tub stop icing up. Go tinted for a bit of privacy from the neighbours’ upstairs windows. Steam isn’t an issue. Tempered glass and aluminum don’t mind the moisture.

Posts and footings: glass covers attach to the house or stand on their own posts. We do both. On most decks the cover ties into the wall on one side and sits on two posts at the outer edge, so it doesn’t eat your floor space.

Five Glass Cover Mistakes We Get Called to Fix

  1. Clear glass over a west-facing deck. Beautiful in May, a greenhouse in August. Tint it.
  2. White frame on a lake view. The frame is all you see. Go black.
  3. Solid roof over the kitchen windows. The kitchen goes dark all winter. Glass over windows, always.
  4. Wiring added after the build. Plan lights before install and the wires stay hidden.
  5. Posts in the middle of the deck. Attach to the wall, posts at the outer edge.

Glass Patio Enclosure and Year-Round Ideas

10. Glass Roof Patio in Winter

Nobody thinks about this until the first winter. A glass roof lets daylight into the house through the short grey months. A solid cover over the kitchen windows makes a Kelowna January darker. Glass doesn’t. Snow slides off the slope, and the tempered glass and aluminum frame are built for our snow. More on that in our glass cover snow load guide.

11. Patio Cover Lighting Built Into the Glass Frame

By September you’re eating in the dark at 8pm. Run low-voltage lighting along the aluminum beams or hang string lights from the frame like the balcony under idea 5. Plan it before the install and the wiring stays hidden. Add it later and it’s a retrofit job.

12. Glass Patio Enclosure: Cover Now, 3-Season Room Later

Some homeowners start with a glass cover and add walls a few years on. Tell us at the quote stage and we’ll set the posts and frame so a 3-season room bolts on later without rebuilding the roof. Cheapest way to future-proof a patio.

Glass Patio Cover Questions

What kind of glass is used on a patio cover?

Tempered safety glass, the same type used in car side windows and shower doors. If it ever breaks it crumbles into small blunt pieces instead of shards. It comes clear or tinted (grey, green or neutral) and sits in a heavy-gauge aluminum frame.

Does a glass patio cover get too hot in summer?

Clear glass on a south or west-facing deck gets warm underneath on a 35C afternoon. Tinted glass cuts the glare and heat noticeably, and mixing solid aluminum panels into the roof cools it further. On north and east-facing patios heat is rarely a problem with clear glass.

Can I put a glass cover on a balcony?

Yes. Balconies are one of the best places for glass because a solid roof would darken the room behind it. A glass balcony cover attaches to the house wall and sits on slim posts at the outer edge, so it keeps the room bright and the balcony dry without taking up floor space.

Can a glass patio cover be turned into an enclosed room later?

It can, if it’s planned that way. Tell us at the quote stage that you may want a 3-season room down the road, and we’ll set the posts and frame so walls and screens can bolt on later without replacing the roof.

How long does a glass patio cover take to install?

Most glass covers go up in one to two days once the aluminum is made in our West Kelowna shop. Larger or unusual builds take longer. We design, manufacture and install in-house with our own crew, and every cover carries a 3-year leak warranty and a 10-year materials warranty.
